Summary: Ten of the 16 Round of 32 matches at the 2026 World Cup are done, and ten teams have secured their place in the Round of 16: Canada, Paraguay, Morocco, Brazil, France, Norway, Mexico, England, the United States and Belgium. The remaining six matches take place on July 2-3. The biggest story of the round so far: Germany and the Netherlands eliminated on the same night. Three of the ten completed matches went to penalty shootouts, and two others were decided in stoppage time, making this arguably the most dramatic opening knockout round in World Cup history.

What is the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup?

The expanded 48-team format introduces a brand-new knockout round before the traditional Round of 16. Twelve groups each contribute their top two finishers (24 teams) plus the eight best third-placed teams, producing 32 sides that contest 16 single-elimination matches between June 28 and July 3. It is the stage that has delivered the most drama at this tournament. To understand the full structure, read how the 2026 World Cup format works.

The biggest stories from the Round of 32

Germany and the Netherlands out on the same night

June 29 will be remembered as the night European football lost two of its biggest names in a matter of hours. Paraguay drew 1-1 with Germany, won the shootout 4-3, and sent one of the tournament favorites home. Hours later, Morocco repeated the trick against the Netherlands: 1-1 after extra time, 3-2 on penalties, with Issa Diop's 90+1 equalizer forcing the additional period. Two pre-tournament European contenders, gone in one evening. For a full breakdown of the Germany result, read the Germany vs Paraguay match report.

Paraguay stun Germany 4-3 on penalties, one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
Morocco celebrate eliminating the Netherlands in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32
Morocco are through again: the Netherlands eliminated on the same night as Germany.

Two details explain why both European sides went out. For Germany: VAR disallowed Jonathan Tah's extra-time goal for a foul on Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, denying what would have been the winner. For the Netherlands: Frenkie de Jong and Virgil van Dijk both missed their penalties. These were not flukes. Both upsets involved crucial margins going against the European sides at the worst possible moment.

Brazil survive Japan's early scare

Brazil needed a 90+5 winner from Gabriel Martinelli to avoid extra time against Japan at NRG Stadium. Japan had led through Kaishu Sano in the 29th minute, and Casemiro's equalizer kept Brazil in the match, but the Seleção looked far from the dominant force many expected. They advance, and the late winner will count the same as a 3-0 in the knockout rounds, but questions remain about whether this Brazil side can sustain the intensity required to go deep in the tournament.

Norway reach the Round of 16 for the first time since 1998

Norway's 2-1 win over Ivory Coast settled by Erling Haaland's 86th-minute goal sends a nation back to the World Cup's second round after a 28-year absence. Martin Nusa had given Norway the lead in the 39th minute, Oumar Diallo equalized for Ivory Coast in the 74th, and the tie looked headed for extra time before Haaland delivered. Norway face Brazil on July 5 at MetLife Stadium, the biggest knockout match in their recent football history against one of the tournament's heavyweights.

For Haaland, the goal continues a 2026 World Cup campaign that has placed him among the early Golden Boot contenders. Norway have been built around his ability to turn half-chances into goals, and the structure of their team (organized, direct, physically imposing) is the kind of profile that can be awkward for possession-based sides to deal with. Brazil know that from their own group stage, where they were pushed to a late winner by Japan. A repeat of that level of pressure from Norway in the Round of 16 could make for one of the most competitive matches of the knockout rounds.

Martinelli's 90+5 winner spares Brazil from extra time against a resilient Japan side.

France and Mexico the most convincing winners

France demolished Sweden 3-0, with Kylian Mbappe scoring either side of a Bradley Barcola goal. Mexico dispatched Ecuador 2-0 at the Azteca in one of the tournament's loudest atmospheres. Both sides look like genuine threats heading into the Round of 16.

Belgium's extraordinary comeback

If any single match captured the spirit of knockout football at this World Cup, it was Belgium vs Senegal at Lumen Field in Seattle. Belgium trailed 0-2 after 51 minutes to goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr. The tournament looked set to claim its third major upset of the round. Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the 86th, Youri Tielemans equalized in the 89th, and then the same Tielemans converted a penalty in the 120th minute of extra time to complete one of the most dramatic wins of this 2026 World Cup. Belgium's exit was announced at 0-2 down and half-written by half a dozen journalists. Instead, they are into the Round of 16 and face the United States on July 6 in Seattle.

Five patterns from the 2026 World Cup Round of 32

Ten matches in, the first knockout round of the expanded format has established clear patterns that will define the rest of the tournament.

PatternEvidence
Group-stage form means nothing in the knockoutsGermany scored 11 goals in groups and were eliminated in the first round
Penalties are deciding matches at record ratesThree of the ten completed matches went to shootouts: Paraguay, Morocco, Belgium
Late goals decide more matches than expectedMartinelli (90+5), Diop (90+1), Eustaquio (90+2) and Haaland (86) all won or equalized in the final minutes
The hosts are thrivingMexico, the USA and Canada all qualified without going to extra time
African teams are performing at the highest levelMorocco eliminated the Netherlands; Senegal pushed Belgium to 120 minutes and beyond

The expanded 48-team format was designed to produce more competitive knockout matches. After ten results, only France and Mexico won with any real comfort before the 80th minute. Eight others went to extra time, penalties or required a stoppage-time goal. That level of sustained tension in the first knockout stage does not have a precedent in World Cup history.

What the results mean for the tournament

The departure of Germany and the Netherlands has reshaped the picture entirely. Europe's remaining hopes rest on France, England, Belgium and whichever sides emerge from the July 2-3 matches. South America, meanwhile, looks strong: Brazil, Argentina (pending) and a Paraguay squad that has already produced one of the tournament's defining moments all remain in contention.

Africa has genuine reason for optimism. Morocco are through again and look capable of another deep run after their 2022 semifinal in Qatar. Their record in knockout football across two tournaments now reads five wins from six matches. The July 2-3 matches could add more African representation to the last 16.

The United States, as co-hosts, face Belgium on July 6 in Seattle in what promises to be one of the most watched matches of the Round of 16. A home-nation exit would be seismic for a tournament the U.S. has staked enormous sporting and commercial capital on. Belgium arrived in the knockout rounds on the back of a remarkable comeback win. The match is entirely open.

For Argentina, Spain, Portugal and the other sides yet to complete their Round of 32 matches, the evidence from the first ten results is a simple instruction: treat every opponent as a genuine threat, regardless of what the group stage suggested. In this format and at this tournament, there are no guaranteed results in the knockouts.

Remaining Round of 32 schedule

MatchDateETVenue
Spain vs AustriaJuly 215:00SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles
Portugal vs CroatiaJuly 219:00BMO Field, Toronto

Australia vs EgyptJuly 314:00AT&T Stadium, Dallas
Argentina vs Cape VerdeJuly 318:00Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
Colombia vs GhanaJuly 321:30Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City

Spain are the strongest remaining favorite: the current European champions won Group E and arrive as one of the most cohesive attacking units in the tournament. Austria finished second in Group B and are not an easy opponent, but this is Spain's match to lose. Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo at his final World Cup, face a Croatia side that always competes in knockout football despite an aging squad. The match in Toronto on July 2 is one of the most anticipated of the remaining Round of 32.

Argentina, the defending World Cup champions, face Cape Verde in Miami on July 3 in what is the clearest mismatch of the remaining ties on paper. Argentina finished top of Group G and have shown no signs of the turbulence that characterized their 2022 group stage. Colombia vs Ghana in Kansas City represents the South America-Africa matchup of the remaining fixtures, with Colombia expected to advance but Ghana capable of the kind of surprise that has already defined this tournament. Australia vs Egypt in Dallas is the most open remaining tie, with both sides having something to prove before the later rounds.

After the Germany-Paraguay and Netherlands-Morocco shocks, every team entering the remaining six matches carries a simple piece of evidence: winning the group stage does not translate into a safe path through the knockouts. Spain, Portugal and Argentina are the heavyweights of the last six ties, but each opponent (Austria, Croatia and Cape Verde respectively) has their own motivation to write their own version of what Paraguay achieved on June 29. The Round of 32 is not over. It still has six stories left to tell.
