The World Cup 2026 bracket is pure single elimination: the loser of each match is out. The 32 qualified teams are the top two teams from all 12 groups plus the eight best third-place teams, a major change in the expanded 48-team format.
If a knockout match is tied after 90 minutes, it goes to two 15-minute periods of extra time. If it is still tied, penalties decide which team advances. There is no away-goals rule in any round.
In the 48-team format, the road to the title is longer than ever: the champion must win 5 knockout rounds after the group stage (Round of 32, Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinal and final). Here is what your team needs at each stage:
Check your team's page to see its group and exact schedule, or review each group's table to follow the qualification race.
The 2026 bracket has five knockout rounds from Round of 32 to final: Round of 32, Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final. There is also a third-place match on July 18.
The final is scheduled for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19, 2026.
The semifinals are scheduled for July 14 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and July 15 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Yes. If a knockout match is tied after 90 minutes, it goes to extra time and then penalties if the score is still level.
Thirty-two teams qualify: the top two from each of the 12 groups plus the eight best third-place teams.
Yes. The expanded format means even tournament favorites can face a knockout match immediately after the group stage.
The bracket (also called the knockout draw or fixture tree) is the diagram that shows the knockout matchups: which team plays which, and how teams advance round by round to the final. In 2026, 32 teams enter the bracket after the group stage.
It is single elimination: the loser is out and the winner advances to the next round. Every tie is a single match at a neutral venue, no two legs. The order is Round of 32, Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
It is eliminated from the tournament immediately. Unlike the group stage, the knockout rounds have no second chance: one match decides who advances and who goes home.
One game. At the World Cup every knockout tie is decided in a single match at a neutral venue, not home and away like some club competitions.
If the score is level after 90 minutes, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played. If it is still level, the match is decided by a penalty shootout. A knockout match never ends in a draw: one team always advances.
Extra time is added when a knockout match is tied after the regular 90 minutes: two 15-minute periods (30 minutes total). If the score is still level at the end, the match goes to a penalty shootout.
It is the final tiebreaker after extra time: each team takes five alternating penalty kicks and the team that scores more wins. If still tied, it continues in sudden death (one each) until there is a winner.
In the group stage, yes: a draw gives one point to each team. In the knockout stage, no: a tie goes to extra time and, if needed, penalties, until there is a winner.
The champion plays up to 8 matches: 3 in the group stage and then 5 straight knockout matches it must win (Round of 32, Round of 16, quarterfinal, semifinal and final). A single loss in those 5 ends its run.
It is the first World Cup with 48 national teams (up from 32). FIFA expanded the format to give more spots to every confederation. The teams are split into 12 groups of 4, which is why the new Round of 32 exists.
It is the first knockout round, new in 2026 because of the 48-team format. The 32 teams that qualify from the group stage play it from June 28 to July 3; the 16 winners advance to the Round of 16.
Besides the top two from each group, the eight best third-placed teams also qualify: the third-place finishers from all 12 groups are compared (by points, goal difference and goals scored) and the best eight advance. The ranking is shown on the standings page.
There is no draw: the Round of 32 matchups are predefined by FIFA based on which group and position each team finishes in (1st, 2nd or best third). The final group position determines the whole bracket path.
Yes. The interactive simulator lets you pick the winners round by round and build your own full bracket to the final, starting from the real Round of 32 matchups.
