World Cup 2026 Standings
All 12 group tables for the FIFA World Cup 2026 — the first tournament with 48 teams and 12 groups. The top two from each group advance automatically; the eight best third-place finishers also reach the Round of 32.
How does the 2026 World Cup group stage work?
For the first time in history, the FIFA World Cup features 48 qualified nations organized into 12 groups of four teams (Groups A through L). Each team plays the other three teams in its group once, producing six matches per group and 72 group-stage matches in total.
The group phase runs from the opening match on June 11, 2026 — Mexico vs South Africa at Estadio Azteca — through June 27, 2026. The final matchday of each group is played simultaneously across both matches to prevent tactical manipulation.
Points are distributed as they have been since 1994: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. The maximum a team can earn in the group stage is 9 points (three wins).
How many teams qualify from each group?
The top two teams in each of the 12 groups advance directly to the Round of 32, producing 24 automatic qualifiers. The remaining eight spots in the Round of 32 go to the eight best third-place finishers across all 12 groups.
The gold bar in the tables below marks the top two spots in each group. Third place is not automatically eliminated — a strong run of results can still send a team through.
Group standings A–L
All 48 teams start at zero. Tables update as group matches are played from June 11 to June 27, 2026.
How does the best third-place team system work?
Unlike the old 32-team format where third place always went home, the 2026 World Cup revives the best-thirds concept. All 12 third-placed teams are ranked against each other — the eight with the best records advance to the Round of 32; the bottom four are eliminated.
This means a team finishing third with four or even six points can still reach the knockout stage, depending on results in other groups. A three-match run with two wins is a perfectly viable qualification path.
How best third-place teams are ranked
- 1. Points earned in all three group matches
- 2. Goal difference across all group matches
- 3. Goals scored across all group matches
- 4. Fewest disciplinary points (yellow and red cards)
- 5. FIFA World Ranking
What are the 2026 World Cup tiebreaker rules?
When two or more teams finish level on points within the same group, FIFA applies the following criteria in strict order until a separation is found:
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the World Cup 2026 group stage work?
The 48 qualified teams are divided into 12 groups of four. Each team plays the other three teams in its group once, for a total of six matches per group and 72 group-stage matches overall. The group phase runs from June 11 to June 27, 2026.
How many teams qualify from each group in the 2026 World Cup?
The top two teams in each group qualify directly for the Round of 32 — that is 24 teams from 12 groups. An additional eight spots go to the best third-place finishers across all 12 groups, bringing the Round of 32 field to 32 teams.
How does the best third-place team system work at World Cup 2026?
All 12 third-place finishers are ranked against each other using: (1) points earned, (2) goal difference, (3) goals scored, (4) fewest disciplinary points (yellow and red cards), (5) FIFA ranking. The eight best third-place teams advance. The other four are eliminated.
What are the tiebreaker rules for the 2026 World Cup group stage?
When teams are level on points, FIFA applies these criteria in order: (1) goal difference across all group matches, (2) goals scored across all group matches, (3) points in head-to-head matches among tied teams, (4) goal difference in those head-to-head matches, (5) goals scored in head-to-head matches, (6) disciplinary points, (7) FIFA ranking draw.
When does the 2026 World Cup group stage end?
The final matchday of the group stage is June 27, 2026. As is standard, the last two matches in each group kick off simultaneously to prevent tactical advantages. The Round of 32 begins on June 28.
How many points does a team need to qualify at World Cup 2026?
There is no guaranteed points threshold. In past tournaments, four points (one win and one draw) has often been enough to qualify from most groups, but the best third-place ranking means even three points can advance a team if results elsewhere are favorable.
How many matches does each team play in the group stage?
Every team plays exactly three group-stage matches — one against each of the other three teams in its group. Each group produces six matches total; across 12 groups, that is 72 group-stage matches.
What happens if teams are level on all tiebreakers?
If every tiebreaking criterion — including head-to-head results, goal difference and disciplinary record — is equal, FIFA conducts a drawing of lots (random draw). This has never been necessary in a World Cup.
