The first 48-team World Cup in history
FIFA World Cup 2026 is not a routine edition. For the first time, 48 national teams will play the World Cup, up from 32 at Qatar 2022. The expansion is the biggest format change since the tournament moved from 24 to 32 teams in 1998.
The direct result is a 39-day tournament with 104 matches, 40 more than Qatar. The opening match is on June 11, 2026 at Estadio Azteca. The final is on July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium in the New York/New Jersey area.
The key new stage is the Round of 32, a knockout round before the Round of 16. Even with 16 additional teams, the champion will still play seven matches.
The tournament is hosted by three countries: the United States with 11 stadiums, Mexico with three and Canada with two, for 16 host venues total.
Match times stretch from early afternoon ET to late-night kickoffs on the West Coast. During the group stage, several days include four matches, so filters and time-zone context become essential for following the tournament.
With 12 groups from A to L, confederations have more representation than ever. See the full group guide or the knockout bracket.
Which countries and stadiums host World Cup 2026?
The 104 matches are spread across 16 stadiums in three countries. Travel, time zones and climate vary sharply from Vancouver and Seattle to Miami, Mexico City and Toronto.
Hosts the final at MetLife Stadium in the New York/New Jersey area. U.S. venues run coast to coast, including Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Boston and Santa Clara.
Estadio Azteca, Estadio Akron and Estadio BBVA. Azteca hosts the opening match on June 11, making Mexico the first country to host matches in three men’s World Cups.
BC Place in Vancouver and BMO Field in Toronto host Canada’s first men’s World Cup matches. Vancouver also creates the widest time-zone shift for many viewers.
How does the World Cup 2026 format work?
The competition has two stages: a group stage with 72 matches from June 11-27, and a knockout stage with 32 matches from June 28 to July 19.
The 48 teams are placed into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three group matches. The top two teams in each group and the eight best third-place teams reach the Round of 32.
From the Round of 16 onward, the tournament follows the familiar single-elimination path with extra time and penalties if a match is level after 90 minutes.

Why the 2026 schedule is different
The expanded field changes how fans follow the tournament. More teams, more simultaneous group-stage stakes and an added knockout round make the schedule heavier than any previous World Cup.
The group stage still gives each team three matches, but the best third-place ranking adds extra scoreboard pressure across Groups A-L. Late group results can affect teams that are not on the field at the same time.
The Round of 32 is the main structural addition. It creates 16 more knockout games before the familiar Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
