Group A key match

Mexico1 - 0South Korea
Thu, Jun 18 · 21:00 ET · Guadalajara

Mexico and South Korea, the group's two most experienced sides, meet for top spot and a place in the Round of 32. The World Cup history is entirely Mexican.

Group A analysis: favourites and what is at stake

Group A revolves around the host. Mexico opens the 2026 World Cup at the Estadio Azteca and starts as the favourite thanks to home advantage, its experience (17 appearances, none with a title) and a relatively accessible group. El Tri’s big aim is to finish top and, above all, to finally break past the round of 16, a barrier it has carried since 1986.

The fight for second place is open: South Korea, Asia’s most experienced side (11 World Cups and a fourth place in 2002), is the main contender, while Czechia (heir to two-time runner-up Czechoslovakia) and South Africa will look to surprise. A group with no European giants, where organisation and efficiency will decide things.

Group A history and head-to-head

Mexico and South Korea have met twice at World Cups and Mexico won both: 3-1 at France 1998 (a Luis Hernandez comeback brace after South Korea's Ha Seok-ju was sent off) and 2-1 at Russia 2018.

South Korea posted Asia's best ever finish as co-hosts in 2002, reaching fourth; Czechia inherits the legacy of Czechoslovakia, World Cup runners-up in 1934 and 1962.

How do teams qualify from Group A?

The top two teams in Group A advance directly to the Round of 32. The third-placed team can still qualify among the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups. When teams are level on points, the 2026 World Cup applies the official FIFA tie-break (head-to-head first, then overall goal difference and goals scored).
