The biggest tournament in football history

The FIFA World Cup 2026 breaks with everything we knew: for the first time in history, 48 national teams compete for the title. That is a huge jump from the 32 teams of Qatar 2022 and creates a brand-new format that many fans still do not fully understand.

In this guide we explain exactly how it works, stage by stage, with concrete examples.

Stage 1. Groups: 12 groups of 4 teams

The tournament kicks off on June 11, 2026 with the group stage. The 48 teams are split into 12 groups (A to L), each with 4 teams. Every team plays 3 matches against the other teams in its group.

Who qualifies from the group stage?

Advancing to the next stage:

  • The top 2 of each group (24 teams in total)
  • The 8 best third-placed teams across the 12 groups

In total, 32 teams advance to the first knockout round. That means even finishing third in your group you can still go through; only the four worst third-placed teams are eliminated.

The group stage ends on June 27, 2026.

How are the best third-placed teams chosen?

The 12 third-placed teams are compared against each other in a common mini-table using points, goal difference, goals scored and fair play. The 8 best performers advance to the Round of 32 against a group winner. The 4 worst third-placed teams are eliminated.

Stage 2. The big new addition: the Round of 32

This is the biggest difference from previous editions. At Qatar 2022, the groups led straight into the Round of 16 with 16 teams. In 2026, there is an intermediate stage called the Round of 32.

Structure and tiebreaker rules

16 single-elimination matches are played between June 28 and July 3. If a match ends level after 90 minutes, there is extra time (two 15-minute halves). If still tied, a penalty shootout. There is no away-goals rule.

How are the matchups decided?

The matchups follow a predetermined bracket based on each group's position. FIFA published the full table of possible pairings before the tournament. In general, a group winner always plays a runner-up or a best third-placed team; two group winners never meet in this round.

What does this mean for fans?

The new format has important practical consequences for supporters:

More geographic diversity than ever

Africa and Asia are the big winners: CAF goes from 5 to 9 spots; the AFC from 4.5 to 8. Historically excluded teams such as Haiti, Uzbekistan, Cape Verde or Congo will debut or return after many years. Global football is no longer just Europe and South America.

Not qualifying is no longer an excuse

With 48 places, missing the World Cup is a bigger scandal than in previous editions. Italy proves it for a third straight time, something unthinkable a decade ago. Federations can no longer hide behind "the group was very hard" when 25% of the world's teams qualify.

More matches, more sustained drama

104 matches versus 64 in Qatar. There will be top-level games almost every day for 5 weeks, turning the tournament into a continuous viewing event and the biggest organizational logistics challenge in football history.

Frequently asked questions

How many teams advance from each group at the 2026 World Cup?

The top two from each of the 12 groups qualify directly for the Round of 32. In addition, the 8 best third-placed teams across the 12 groups also advance, completing the 32 teams that play the first knockout round.

What is the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup?

It is a completely new knockout stage in World Cup history. It runs from June 28 to July 3, 2026, with 16 single-elimination matches. The winner advances to the Round of 16; if the score is level at the end of regulation, extra time is played and, if still tied, a penalty shootout decides.

What is the minimum number of matches each team plays at the 2026 World Cup?

Every team plays at least 3 matches (group stage). If it advances, it will play at least 4 (Round of 32), 5 (Round of 16), 6 (quarters), 7 (semis) or 8 if it reaches the final. The champion plays 8 matches in total.

How are the best third-placed teams decided?

The records of all teams finishing third in their groups are compared using these criteria in order: points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play (cards) and, if still tied, a drawing of lots.
